Each year, Quebec’s vehicle owners scrap approximately
7 million tires, which corresponds to approximately 8.4 million
PTE (passenger tire equivalents). The 2002-08 Program of Integrated
Management of Scrap Tires diverted nearly 7.3 million PTE in
2005-06. The remainder (approximately 1 million PTE) is destined
for export, generally to developing countries.
Scrap tire recycling generates finished products with a wide-range
of uses, including, remoulded tires, roll-out container tires,
mud guards, blasting mats, anti-slip and anti-fatigue mats, underlays,
acoustic underlays, sport surfaces, flooring, acoustic blankets,
speed bumps, height adjustment rings, bumpers, flower boxes (planters),
and even handicrafts. Many of these products are exported from
Quebec.
