The Used Tire Management Program

Every year over 900,000 used tires are collected from tire retailers across Nouvelle-Écosse for recycling into useful new products. On-road motor vehicle tires with a rim size of 24.5 inches or less have been banned from disposal in Nouvelle-Écosse since 1997, in an effort to conserve landfill space and reduce environmental hazards. To date, RRFB Nouvelle-Écosse has diverted more than 7 million tires from landfills.

To get the tire rolling...

When a new tire is purchased in Nouvelle-Écosse, a one-time environmental fee is applied at the point of sale. Retailers submit the fee to RRFB Nouvelle-Écosse to support the costs of collecting and recycling the tires.

Environmental Fee

  For all passenger tires

$3.00 per tire

For all light truck tires not exceeding 17"

$3.00 per tire

For all truck tires greater then 17" but not exceeding 24.5"

$9.00 per tire

Roll it back for recycling...

You can return up to four tires at a time, to any tire retailer in the province, at no cost. They must be off the rim and free of mud and debris. We recommend leaving used tires at the retailer when you buy new ones.

Return these tires to retailer

  • car/truck tires
  • motorcycle tires
  • camper tires
  • trailer tires

Contact your local municipal unit for information on proper disposal of other types of tires.
