On April 1, 2002, government regulation for the Used Tire Recycling
Program placed a ban on disposal of tires in municipal waste
disposal sites and provided residents with an environmentally
safe way to dispose of tires. In Newfoundland and Labrador, retailers
must remit a levy to MMSB of $3 on new tires with a rim diameter
of 17 inches or less, and $9 on new tires with a rim diameter
greater than 17 inches and equal to or less than 24.5 inches.
MMSB which is a Crown agency of the Department of Environment
and Conservation, is responsible for the operations of the Used
Tire Recycling Program. MMSB is currently collecting tires from
retailers, municipal waste disposal sites, and highway depots
operated by the Provincial Department of Transportation and Works
and storing them in privately owned and operated storage yards
on the island portion of the province.
