Processors

Three processors process approximately 1.4 million PTE’s annually. They produce blast mats, traffic cone weights, mats, mud flaps, truck box liners, feeders, and playground crumb.

The Program’s processors are under contract to the Tire Stewardship Board. Environmental Impairment Liability Insurance is mandatory. The Tire Stewardship Board pays the processor only on proof-of-sale of a new product from recycled tires. One processor annually removes approximately 80,000 PTE’s from the Program for retreading or salvage.

Grants have been provided for research. Public education and communication have been done through brochures, newspaper articles, trade magazines and demonstration projects such as walkways, roads, a Pan Am sports field and playground areas using crumb rubber as a base.
