HistoryIn 1999, following a symposium held by the Rubber Association of Canada, in which members of tire recycling agencies in Canada participated, discussions were held among the operators of the agencies to formalize an association, building on the success of monthly contacts through telephone conference calls. Operators from Manitoba to British Columbia held telephone conferences, and operators from Quebec to Newfoundland held telephone conferences. It was also agreed to create an informal association of tire recycling programs across Canada, including Board members and staff. The proposed organization was named The Canadian Alliance of Provincial Tire Recycling Programs. CATRA was formed as a result of these discussions in 1999. Membership included representation from all Provinces in Canada, including the Yukon Territory. The goal of CATRA was to – “enhance the effectiveness of scrap tire diversion and recycling across Canada through sharing of information, expertise, and resources.” Although CATRA is an informal organization, there is a Board of Directors consisting of either members elected from agencies in Provinces or senior staff representing tire recycling programs in Provinces. The two-year term of the Chair of the Board rotates across Canada. The current Chair is Don Blythe, Tire Stewardship BC, appointed for 2010 - 2011. |
